Long Live Retail! | denise lee yohn: brand as business bites?

Written by  on May 9, 2012 Categories: cogent Tags: ,

brand as business bit: ?I got a response to my last ?brand as business brief?, Value and Values, that I just have to share with you.? It?s from Kevin Knight, who along with his wife Heather, run Anjou Bakery, a ?a thriving incubator of good taste in food? in Cashmere, WA (about 2 hours East of Seattle.)? Kevin writes:

?I am currently re-reading ?Setting the Table? by Danny Meyer and at the end of the introduction he says ?Business, like life, is all about how you make people feel. It?s that simple, and it?s that hard.?? He defines Great Service as delivering on your promise, steps 1 ? x, a monologue, what your company sets out to do, etc. Great Hospitality on the other hand is a human dialog that makes people feel good. It?s thoughtful and creative, customized and intelligent.

To achieve all you can be (in life and business) you must be good at both?In our business I try to tell everyone to think of each customer as if they were their grandmother. A bit corny perhaps, but for me that idea sets the stage for a positive interaction.?

It?s because of retailers like Kevin and the hundreds of thousands of others out there who ?get it,? that I believe retail is far from dead.? Long live retail!

P.S. (My next ?brand as business brief? on brand experiences is coming out next week ? don?t miss out ? subscribe here.)

Wonga Extends Its Payday Loans To Small Businesses In UK …

Written by  on  Categories: cogent Tags: , ,

Wonga.com, the successful but controversial payday loans provider, is extending its credit service to small businesses in the UK. The move is a smart one given the current economic climate. Banks have been lambasted for not lending to small businesses ? Wonga is simply going to try and fill in the gap ? and take advantage. Needless to say this could end up being a huge business for Wonga.

Despite attracting the ire of financial journalists ? including the Daily Telegraph, which prevented it from winning its Startup 100 awards ? Wonga has made as many as 4 million short-term loans to consumers since its launch in 2007.

The new scheme means it will be offering SMEs loans of ?3,000 to ?10,000 pounds for between one and 52 weeks depending on the application. Interest rates will be fixed at between 0.3 and 2 percent per week, with the risk attached to the loan.

Under the new service, business will have to provide information about their company and its directors, who personally guarantee the loan, as with normal Wonga loans. Wonga says the application takes about 12 minutes, and money can be transferred to the business in around half an hour.

Wonga has a sophisticated automated risk-processing algorithm to quickly tell an applicant if they can have a loan or not. It turns down about two-thirds of applications. This simple application process it being extended to small businesses.

Chief Executive Errol Damelin said: ?We wanted it to have all the characteristics that people positively associate with Wonga in terms of transparency, simplicity, ease of use, speed ? and we wanted to bring that to small business.?

Wonga has been criticized for charging just under 1 percent per day interest, something which can appeal to vulnerable people. However the company insists it takes these people out of the black hole of dealing with often violent loan sharks on the street, and also mainly appeals to white-collar workers who can usually afford the payments at the end of the month

Wonga does not take deposits and operates under a consumer-credit license, so it is not subject to the capital requirements that banks are. That means it is more free to lend than banks.

Wonga operates in Britain but is looking at Canada and South Africa. The company is backed by Accel Partners, Balderton Capital, Dawn Capital, Greylock Partners, Oak Investment Partners and the Wellcome Trust. The company raised ?73 million in new capital a year ago.

Wonga.com provides small, short-term cash advances to UK consumers online. The company uses sophisticated risk and decisioning technology to make automated yet responsible lending decisions. Applicants can first determine the exact size and length of the cash advance required, using sliders on the Wonga home page, before submitting personal details online. Wonga offers cash deposits within minutes and loans are available up to £750, for between five and 30 days. Wonga?s real-time and fully automated loan processing systems means more speed,…

‘Avengers’ smashes record: $200.3 million debut

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Hulk, smash.

That’s what Captain America tells the Incredible Hulk to do in “The Avengers,” and that’s what the Marvel Comics superhero mash-up did at the box office, smashing the domestic revenue record with a $200.3 million debut.

It’s by far the biggest opening ever, shooting past the previous record of $169.2 million for the debut of last year’s “Harry Potter” finale.

“The Avengers” added $151.5 million overseas over the weekend to bring its total to $441.5 million since it began opening internationally a week earlier.

That raised the film’s worldwide haul to $641.8 million in barely a week and a half, more than its Marvel superhero forerunners “Iron Man,” ”Iron Man 2,” ”Thor” and “Captain America” took in during their entire runs.

If distributor Disney’s domestic estimate Sunday holds when the final weekend count is released Monday, “The Avengers” would be the first movie ever to haul in $200 million in a single weekend.

While the number could dip below $200 million come Monday, Disney spent the weekend revising its forecasts upward as business kept growing.

“There aren’t even words, to be honest. I’m running low on double takes. Every time we looked at a number, it just got bigger than what we could have hoped for in the best-case assumption,” said Dave Hollis, Disney’s head of distribution. “With this film, this weekend, anything is possible.”

“The Avengers” started with solid midnight crowds Friday, though nowhere near a record. Then it did $80.5 million for the full day Friday, second only to the “Harry Potter” finale’s $91.1 million first day.

Revenues held up much better than expected with $69.7 million Saturday, and Disney estimated that the film would bring in $50.1 million more on Sunday.

The record weekend was the culmination of years of careful planning by Marvel Studios, which has included teasers for an “Avengers” dream team collaboration in its solo superhero adventures.

Directed by Joss Whedon (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”), “The Avengers” features Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.

A $200 million total for every movie in release is considered a great weekend for the business as a whole, so “The Avengers” redefines the standards for a blockbuster debut.

“If ‘The Avengers’ is any indication, we’re going to see a leap rather than a gentle little nudge into new territory, and the lineup is there to justify it going forward,” said Greg Foster, chairman and president of the huge-screen IMAX cinema chain.

Crowds were so anxious to see the film on IMAX’s giant screens that Foster said the company had only one problem: it ran out of seats to sell.

Overall domestic revenues came in at $248 million, climbing 49 percent compared to the same weekend last year, when “Thor” opened with $65.7 million, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com. “The Avengers” accounted for four-fifths of the weekend’s domestic receipts.

Hollywood launched a potentially record-shattering summer with a vengeance, “The Avengers” landing as just the first of three huge superhero tales that highlight a lineup filled with other blockbusters in the making.

“The Amazing Spider-Man” follows on July 3 and “The Dark Knight Rises” wraps up the current Batman series on July 20.

Until the “Harry Potter” finale, 2008′s “The Dark Knight” had held the revenue record with a $158.4 million debut. Before that, the record-holder was 2007′s “Spider-Man 3″ with $151.1 million.

So anticipation for those two films could rival that of “The Avengers.”

As admission prices rise, Hollywood’s record-breakers often take in more money but sell fewer tickets than previous blockbusters. But “The Avengers” took in so much money that it’s the undisputed champ among debuts.

Based on average admission prices the years they were released, “The Dark Knight” and “Spider-Man 3″ had led with about 22 million tickets sold each over opening weekend. Today’s average prices put “The Avengers” tally at around 25.6 million tickets sold.

Along with the superhero films, Hollywood’s summer lineup includes the action tales “Men in Black 3,” ”G.I. Joe: Retaliation,” ”Battleship,” ”Total Recall” and “Prometheus,” director Ridley Scott’s return to the sci-fi territory of his horror hit “Alien.”

Big family fare includes the animated adventures “Brave,” from “Toy Story” creator Pixar Animation, and the sequels “Ice Age: Continental Drift” and “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted.”

The comedy lineup features Adam Sandler’s “That’s My Boy,” Will Ferrell’s “The Campaign” and Sacha Baron Cohen’s “The Dictator.”

“‘The Avengers’ kicks off what looks to me to be the summer box-office equivalent of the 100-year flood,” said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian. “This is perhaps the most perfect summer lineup in box-office history.”

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. “The Avengers,” $200.3 million ($151.5 million international).

2. “Think Like a Man,” $8 million.

3. “The Hunger Games,” $5.7 million ($4.3 million international).

4. “The Lucky One,” $5.5 million ($5.5 million international).

WASHINGTON (AP) ? In campaign mode for months, President Barack Obama is making his quest for a second term official with rallies in Ohio and Virginia while casting Republican rival Mitt Romney as a flip-flopping protector of the rich.

The events Saturday at two universities, Ohio State and Virginia Commonwealth, were billed as the official kickoff of Obama’s re-election bid, even though he’s been solidly engaged in his campaign and over a year ago filed the necessary paperwork to run again.

During the events, the president planned to try to convince voters that his policies have put the economy on more solid footing despite fresh evidence that the job market remains weak. He also was expected to try to define Romney as a candidate peddling failed policies for both the economy and national security.

Obama has headlined dozens of fundraisers around the country as his campaign tries to build a solid money advantage over Romney. In his official White House travels, often to the most contested states, the president has pitched policy positions that fit neatly into the campaign’s central theme of economic fairness. They range from a millionaires’ tax to freezing student loan interest rates.

Official campaign rallies can free Obama up to take more direct aim at Romney. Until now, Obama has used Romney’s name sparingly, often choosing instead to cloak his criticisms of Romney in attacks against generic Republicans.

Some Democrats saw Saturday’s rallies as a chance for Obama to put Republicans on notice that he plans to be an aggressor in the race.

“What we’ve seen too many times in the past is Democrats are way too meek in defining their opponents or defining themselves in an election,” said Maria Cardona, a Democratic strategist. “This president is not going to let the Republicans define him.”

Obama’s speeches Saturday weren’t expected to differ greatly from what he’s been saying in fundraisers or what his team has said in the campaign.

David Axelrod, an Obama senior adviser, said the president wasn’t a candidate who “reinvents himself week to week,” as Axelrod poked at Romney’s sometimes shifting positions. Instead, Axelrod and other advisers Obama would reinforce broader themes of advocating for the middle class and trying to portray Romney as the candidate for the wealthiest Americans.

Republicans argue the Obama campaign is not aiming for consistency, but rather struggling to find a comprehensive vision for a second term.

“They have nothing positive to run,” said Sean Spicer, communications director for the Republican National Committee. “No successful incumbent, no impressive record and no thriving economy.”

The latest job numbers from Friday highlighted the challenge Obama faces in convincing voters that he is the right steward for the economy. Job growth slumped for a second straight month. The unemployment rate dropped to 8.1 percent but largely because more people stopped looking for work and therefore were no longer deemed unemployed.

In the face of continued economic unease, Obama’s rallies Saturday’s were intended to recapture some of the youthful, hopeful energy of his 2008 campaign.

The campus settings were likely to create the atmosphere where Obama is at his best, feeding off the energy of an enthusiastic crowd. Young voters were a crucial voting bloc in 2008 victory.

Michelle Obama was joining the president at the stops in states critical to the re-election effort.

In 2008, Obama won Ohio while reversing decades of Republican dominance in Virginia.

Since then, Virginia has swung back toward the GOP in statewide elections. Both Obama and Romney advisers acknowledge that the state is up for grabs.

During a campaign event in Portsmouth, Va., on Thursday, Romney said, “This may well be the state that decides who the next president is.”

Flashy, fiery Sarkozy fades from French scene

Written by  on  Categories: cogent Tags:

PARIS (AP) ? When Nicolas Sarkozy bounded up the steps of France‘s presidential palace in jogging shorts and shoes on his first day in office five years ago, many French instantly sensed they were in for something new.

In a country where King Louis XIV’s phrase “L’Etat, c’est moi” ? “I am the state ? resonated for later heads of state, the message from Sarkozy was clear: Tradition-bound France needed a self-image makeover.

His idea of change wasn’t exactly what many French had in mind.

Sarkozy’s meticulously built political career all but collapsed Sunday, after he lost to Francois Hollande, an unassuming and bespectacled Socialist, in France‘s presidential run-off. Sarkozy becomes the first French one-term president since Valery Giscard d’Estaing lost his re-election bid in 1981.

Sarkozy’s inauguration day jog, which conveyed youthful vigor, ultimately epitomized what many French came to see as jejeune, self-centered antics unbefitting of a president at a time when economic troubles and persistently high joblessness were on most minds.

“I take full responsibility for this defeat,” he said after the results came out Sunday night.

Some political brethren grumbled that Sarkozy should have officially jumped into his re-election race earlier, instead of clinging to his mantle as head of state until February. Other pundits suggested that less controversial conservatives such as Prime Minister Francois Fillon or Foreign Minister Alain Juppe would have had a better shot at beating Hollande than Sarkozy did.

A frank-speaking, energetic and media-savvy former interior minister, Sarkozy won the presidency in 2007 over Segolene Royal ? Hollande’s former partner, and mother of his four children ? with an unlikely campaign built on promises of “rupture” from the policies of Jacques Chirac, his fellow conservative and former mentor.

It was personal style, many pollsters said, that largely did in Sarkozy. After his 2007 victory speech on Place de la Concorde, Sarkozy sped over to one of the ritziest restaurants on the Champs-Elysees to celebrate; then he jetted off to the yacht of a tycoon friend in the Mediterranean. Critics pounced on the showiness.

A lackluster economy and his inability to make good on his 2007 race promises to shrink persistently high joblessness didn’t help. In the fourth quarter of 2011, France‘s unemployment rate was nearly 10 percent. In January, S&P downgraded France‘s state debt rating from its top tier, delivering a blow to his image as financial-manager-in-chief.

Sarkozy sought to cast himself as powerless: On the 2012 campaign trail, he repeatedly pointed to Europe’s financial crisis ? in places like Italy and Greece ? that endangered the euro zone. He sought to cast himself as a “ship captain whose boat was in a full storm.”

In many ways, Nicolas Sarkozy was an anomaly as France‘s president.

He had a foreign-sounding surname. He didn’t attend the most elite French university for public servants. He seemed to relish in chucking out the regal niceties of the presidency. His off-the-cuff remarks, like calling a somewhat belligerent passer-by at a Paris farm fair “a poor jerk,” got him in trouble.

Sarkozy reportedly once said he’d foreseen himself more as a prime minister ? whose job is the day-to-day running of the government, requiring a lot of energy ? than head of state, who traditional role is about statecraft.

But backed by a strong majority of his conservative UMP party in the National Assembly, and by force of personality, Sarkozy commandeered the reins of power. His prime minister, Francois Fillon, was seen as his executor.

In his first year in office, Sarkozy’s team rammed through changes like a cap on income taxes for the cut for the wealthiest, seen by critics as a sop to his uber-rich friends that backed his candidacy and were in his inner circle from his years as mayor of the wealthy Paris suburb of Neuilly-sur-Seine.

Other reforms came hard, in the face of protest.

Fillon’s team wrote into law minimum-service requirements during France‘s often-crippling labor strikes. It raised the retirement age to 62, from 60, in the face of protests. It pushed through complex reforms to cut costs in a creaky university system, and students protested in the streets by the thousands.

He reduced payroll taxes on overtime pay, and cut the bureaucracy by refusing to replace one of every two retiring state workers.

In the history books, Sarkozy’s impact may well be more notable for what he accomplished abroad than at home: Under France‘s presidency of the European Union in 2008, he mediated between Russia and Georgia during their brief war; the following year, he replaced France in NATO’s integrated command after a 43-year absence;

Politically, he was a mix.

Sarkozy favors free markets, but has been unafraid to defend French business. He long took pride in his moniker as “Sarko the American” ? and has rebuilt ties both with the United States and Israel. He led France into a leadership role in a NATO-backed revolution in Libya that toppled Moammar Gadhafi, and has taken a tough line on nuclear-minded Iran. Along with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, he helped craft a hard-won European fiscal treaty meant to stem the continent’s debt crisis.

As interior minister, Sarkozy was generally successful as a crime-fighter. But his tough talk on youth in immigrant-heavy housing projects also often infuriated many French citizens whose families hail from former French colonies in north and sub-Saharan Africa.

Yet as interior minister, he helped create the country’s largest confederation of Muslim groups, the CFCM, and supported a form of French-styled “affirmative action” ? before he abandoned it under pressure in his conservative political camp which saw preferential treatment as against France’s color-blind values.

Born on Jan. 28, 1955, Nicolas Paul Stephane Sarkozy de Nagy-Bocsa grew up in a middle-class home in Paris, the second of three sons born of a half-Jewish French mother and an aristocratic Hungarian emigre father who fled Communism after World War II.

Sarkozy is the first French president to divorce and remarry while in office. He is the father of three sons and, as of last year, a daughter with former supermodel Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, his third wife.

Before this election, Sarkozy said he’d quit politics if he lost.

“A new epoch is opening,” he said Sunday night, saying he’d become a citizen “like you.” He gave no specifics about his plans.

Sarkozy got a searing taste of defeat 13 years ago, after he headed a center-right list of candidates for European parliamentary elections, and the loss sent him into retreat from national politics.

“I recognize failure. I take full responsibility. I am ready to learn the consequences,” he wrote in his 2001 book “Libre” (“Free”) of that campaign in 1999, which he assumed leadership only six weeks before the vote. “And in the situation I find myself in this spring evening,” he wrote, remembering the loss, “being, remaining, and being considered dignified is my only ambition.”

A traffic sign can be seen in front of the pre-election billboard showing presidential candidate Ivica Dacic leader of Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) and once the party of former strongman Slobodan Milosevic, splattered with paint in Belgrade, Serbia, Saturday, May 5, 2012. (AP) ? Serbs are voting to choose a president, a Parliament and local authorities, with the country’s pro-European Union government facing a strong challenge from nationalists promising jobs and a battle against corruption.

Sunday’s election is an important step for Serbia’s plans to become an EU member, after being an isolated pariah state under late autocrat Slobodan Milosevic in the 1990s.

The ballots also could determine whether Serbia continues to reconcile with its neighbors, including the former province of Kosovo which declared independence in 2008.

The two leading presidential contenders are Boris Tadic and his pro-EU Democratic Party, and Milosevic’s former ally Tomislav Nikolic, whose nationalist Serbian Progressive Party has benefited from the EU’s economic troubles, which have dimmed the bloc’s allure for many Serbs.

Chelsea tops Liverpool?to win FA Cup

WEMBLEY, England (AP) -Four goals in four FA Cup finals, and now four winners’ medals for Didier Drogba.

Cementing his status as Chelsea’s player for the big occasions, Drogba clinched a 2-1 victory over Liverpool on Saturday to prove his enduring value to the team at the age of 34.

“He is my hero,” midfielder Frank Lampard said. “No striker I have ever played with has scored so many important goals in finals.”

In fact, no player has ever scored in as many FA Cup finals as Drogba.

“That’s the reason why I came here, to win trophies and to make history with the club,” said Drogba, who joined Chelsea in 2004. “The result is great for us, for the fans, for the club. Our fourth FA Cup final, fourth win, fourth trophy.”

But it could be his last FA Cup as the Ivorian’s contract expires at the end of the season.

“He’s not 65. He’s a top professional,” Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo said when asked about Drogba’s future.

Drogba scored his eighth goal in eight games at Wembley in the 52nd minute of the 131st final of the competition, with Chelsea already leading through Ramires’ deflected 11th-minute strike.

Drogba slotted the ball through defender Martin Skrtel’s legs and into the net after being fed by Lampard as a lethargic Liverpool posed little threat.

That was until Liverpool substitute Andy Carroll breathed life back into the game when he pulled one back in the 64th after teasing his way around Chelsea captain John Terry.

Chelsea had to survive a late, intense Liverpool onslaught, with Carroll believing he had equalized when a close-range header was swatted away on the goal line via the crossbar by goalkeeper Petr Cech.

But the referee waved away Liverpool’s appeals for a goal, with replays indicating that the entire ball did not cross the line.

And Terry went on to become the first captain to lift the FA Cup four times with the same club.

“It’s fantastic, it’s what we live for,” Terry said. “At times people have slated us as too old, past it or not together but as a team we come together and unite when our backs are against the wall.”

As they have been for most of the season. Chelsea’s freefall, though, was halted after Di Matteo replaced Andre Villas-Boas as coach two months ago until the end of the season.

While Chelsea is still languishing outside of the four Champions League qualification places in sixth place in the English Premier League, the team can win the European Cup for the first time by beating Bayern Munich in two weeks.

“I’m very happy for the players because we’ve been heavily criticized this season and we’ve got the trophy and have the chance for another one,” Di Matteo said. “It’s been a difficult season but the players have made the club proud. It’s been hard work but we came through it.”

Di Matteo, who also won the FA Cup twice as a player for Chelsea, is making it increasingly difficult for the club not to extend his contract.

“He has been brilliant,” Lampard said. “He has turned the club around.”

Liverpool had hoped the return of Kenny Dalglish in January 2011 would similarly rouse its faltering fortunes.

But while the Reds won the League Cup in February, their Premier League form has been even worse than Chelsea’s – sitting eighth – and they didn’t even play in Europe this season.

Dalglish suggested his team’s inability to make an impact on Saturday until midway through the second half was a sign of its inexperience.

“We were excellent for the last half hour, but the game lasts for 90 minutes,” he said. “You can’t give a team like Chelsea a two-goal head start. It’s credit to our lads that they went close to an equalizer after Andy scored, but they had left themselves too much to do.

“I don’t think the first hour was a reflection of the quality of the players we had out there … these players will get better and benefit from this experience – they’ve been in two cup finals in this season.”

Liverpool gifted Chelsea the opener after a pair of mistakes. Jay Spearing initially gave the ball away in midfield to Juan Mata, who set Ramires free to charge toward the Liverpool goal.

Goalkeeper Pepe Reina was beaten too easily at his near post by Ramires when a shot was deflected in by the goalie’s knee.

It was a reflection of a shoddy first-half performance from Liverpool, which struggled to break through a Chelsea back four including Ashley Cole, who went on to win his seventh FA Cup final, with the first three coming at Arsenal.

Despite scoring the semifinal winner and being Liverpool’s most expensive player, Carroll was dropped in favor of Luis Suarez up front, but the isolated striker struggled to make an impact.

Carroll, though, netted after just 10 minutes on the pitch to make it 2-1.

Stewart Downing’s tenacity down the left flank paid off, challenging Boswinga before the ball fell to Carroll to lash it into the net.

“Until they scored it was very, very comfortable,” Lampard said. “They bombarded us and it was hard to deal with.”

But Chelsea clung on to win the world’s oldest knockout competition for a seventh time.
